Possible denial of service attack may have affected some sites
July 16th, 2006 11:39 AET

Monitoring detected exhaustion of available resources on several servers of the linux cluster, several times this morning.

On investigation, one particular IP address was connecting multiple times to multiple servers and holding the connection open, thus consuming a web server thread until the webserver timed-out.

After blocking that IP address at our firewall, the servers returned to normal.

Sites on the cluster may have appeared to be down for short periods as legitimate users were denied a connection due to this.

Update 21:30 AEST: Another possible DOS attack from an IP on the same ISP was blocked this evening. Again, sites may have had intermittent outages due to exhaustion of connections on each webserver in the cluster.

Update 17 Jul 16:15 AEST: Continuing to get DOS attacks from new IP addresses on the same ISP probably as the person resets their router and gets assigned a new IP address.  We are attempting to get the ISP involved to act and have also involved the Police.  We have also shutdown the website the DOS attacks are targetting as a temporary measure.
